like it or not

Depth, character, maturity.

Sometimes I like a piece, or like MOST of it, but it lacks depth and character, or maturity. The only way to get it there is to keep going, and in this process the piece is sure to go through awkward stages that you “don’t like”. So… for me it’s important to withhold judgment. NOT look at it in terms of Do I Like It, but What Happens Next?

magentafest

I got carried away with magenta. The whole painting is disturbingly bright. But crops of it are very pleasant. As a child, I was fascinated with magenta, the word and the color. It seemed rare and unusual, so I still feel surprised that it has a prominent place in the CMYK model. I looked up the name – it was named in celebration of the Battle of Magenta, to celebrate a victory of the French and Sardinian army on June 4, 1859, near the Italian town of that name.

house of opaque meanings

I dreamt of a Facebook group called “The House of Opaque Meanings.”

The details of the dream are gone now, but it was a marvelous group that you didn’t join, but that surprised you with delightful visual gifts posted to your wall. Anyone could receive one, and it was considered quite a privilege.

I really love the wordplay of dreams. I’ve been working on transparent and opaque painting for a few weeks in Jane’s class. Haven’t figured out the meaning of opaque, but I guess that’s why it’s opaque!
