I subscribe to India Flint’s Substack “floribundineum<\/a>.” Today she posted this Wendell Berry poem. I liked it so much I wanted to post it here to revisit. From The Poetry Foundation<\/a>. How to Be a Poet<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

i   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make a place to sit down.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sit down. Be quiet.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You must depend upon   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

affection, reading, knowledge,   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

skill\u2014more of each   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

than you have\u2014inspiration,   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

work, growing older, patience,   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

for patience joins time   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

to eternity. Any readers   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

who like your poems,   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

doubt their judgment.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

ii   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Breathe with unconditional breath   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

the unconditioned air.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shun electric wire.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Communicate slowly. Live   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

a three-dimensioned life;   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

stay away from screens.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stay away from anything   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

that obscures the place it is in.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are no unsacred places;   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

there are only sacred places   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

and desecrated places.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accept what comes from silence.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make the best you can of it.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of the little words that come   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

out of the silence, like prayers   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

prayed back to the one who prays,   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

make a poem that does not disturb   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

the silence from which it came.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
