Quilt progress. I’ve figured out the size. What a relief. About 53″ wide and 75″ long. Now I can finally figure out how many squares I need to finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have the scaffolding squares ready to stitch together – the short edge row and the three strips in the middle. Lots of golds, continuing the rhythm established in the strips already there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next is the double long borders. The one on the left is laid out in the photo, just to try out the number of squares needed. But there’s too much gold. I’m going to have to make something else with all these gold squares. It needs to look more similar to the part of the border that’s already done, with mostly blues and neutrals. Maybe add some 1×1 or 2×2 nine-patches to break things up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last, filling in the four strips with bigger 4×4 squares. Lots of khaki needed. I will use up the pants material, some of which is sun-damaged and probably not strong enough to use. I’ll even use the pockets. There may be some 2×2 four-patches in these strips. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So just to continue to indulge in quilting math – I need 32 3x3s (or equivalent) and 40 4x4s (or equivalent). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, a leap to the kitchen: sauerkraut, applesauce, maybe apple butter? I need to make stock. And something with turnips (?) Also weeding the garden rows and covering them with hay mulch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
