It’s visible along a nearby stretch of Route 1, where there’s no place to pull over and cars are going 60-plus mph. I finally figured it out. I have to turn at a certain side road, park the car on the shoulder, and walk across Route 1. Plenty of visibility crossing the road, so that’s not a problem. Of course, when I managed it for the first time, the tide was out, so the island doesn’t show at its best. By the end of the summer, I will capture it early some morning when the tide’s in and the sea is glassy smooth.

Little Island, not an island at low tide

Fog is starting to be interesting as the days warm up. It passes through, sometimes close to the ground, sometimes thick enough to cast a shadow, sometimes blotting out the sun like a thick cloud cover that dissipates when you travel just a mile or two inland. One afternoon this week, this stray scrap of fog passed over a field as I was walking. I should have taken video because it was moving quickly.

That’s fog moving through

I’m starting a new quilt top. It’s based on a design called the housetop, which is a variation of the log cabin. Basically it’s concentric squares (rectangles) of alternating colors. I’m going to use the linen I dyed with indigo at a March workshop. Most of it is quite light blue in color, like the sky, with a few clouds floating through. And one or more moons. We’ll see how they fit in.

The idea of a “housetop” in sky colors is irresistible for summer stitching. Even though I should be finishing the quilts I’ve already pieced.
