So subtle, it’s impossible to capture
\n(oh, I mean to “translate”*) and
\nit only lasts a couple of
\ndays. A vague sheen of pink,
\nmaroon, pale green, the phenomenal infancy
\nof a variety of leaves disturbs
\nthe somber walnut-colored hillside. A vista
\nI would never dare to paint. <\/p>\n

It’s almost ominous and yet deeply
\naffecting; annually expected yet always unbelievable. <\/p>\n

\nIn general, though, I believe that the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153spirit of place\u00e2\u20ac\u009d we value so highly cannot entirely be put into a painting by design. No amount of analysis or planning will ensure that looking at the painting will feel like being there. When that does happen it is more a matter of the painter having been fully present in the place and not preoccupied by self-concern. <\/p>\n

Maybe this is why the word capture makes me cringe when it is applied to painting. You\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve heard it, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m sure: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The artist captures the moment in watercolor \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The fleeting light is captured forever \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The subject\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s personality is captured in a few swift strokes \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Captured, tortured, and held for ransom. What are we, pirates? I prefer to think of painting as an act of translation, a much more civilized activity.<\/p>\n
