Tomatillos
Last week, I harvested all the rest of the tomatillos and pulled up the plants. They were growing in the hoophouse, where I usually plant a couple of seedlings. I have a surplus of fruit of course, so after eating some in a burrito, I decided to roast and freeze the rest of them. (Two pints of tomatillo salsa were already on the shelf from earlier harvests.) A half hour of de-husking in the strong morning sun was called for.
Tomatillos were a surprise to me. I don’t remember how I realized that they grew well in Maine. Maybe it was by browsing a Fedco catalog. I always thought of them as a Mexican or southwest crop. But they grow well – the plants I pulled up were very vigorous and still had flowers on them. I just love the colors. The purple variety is called “Purple Blush” and I forget the name of the green variety. They smell delightful, kind of like a pineapple.

I captured the colors from this photo using the Color Collect app. The purples are amazing!
