Icelandic tales – Gamla Laugin (secret lagoon)
I think this was the most special place we visited and this is definitely my favorite photo. Gamla Laugin, the Secret Lagoon.
So-called because it is off the beaten track, I guess. Not as much visited as the Blue Lagoon. The most recent volcano erupted near the Blue Lagoon and covered the parking lot with lava. They quickly developed a new parking area/shuttle system. You have to make a reservation online for the Blue Lagoon, but the Secret Lagoon was very easy.
And relaxing. That water is about the temperature of a hot bath. You could get hotter water if you wanted by edging near to where the boiling water trickled in from the hot springs near the river. It looks like we were alone there, but there were actually other people, lots of American voices.
It was one of the things we really wanted to do in Iceland and we did it! In spite of the icy cold dash in a bathing suit from the showers to the lagoon (and back). It was worth it.
Catherine~ Oh my gosh, these photos are like paintings ?? The first and last photos look like cards. Even the photo of Sam is such a moment in time captured. Beautiful.
I’ve only been in a natural hot springs once…in the late 1970’s near Bishop, CA. We had to keep moving around to find the warm spots, because the water in some spots would suddenly get COLD! lol
