Sea and sky
I’ve wanted to photograph this island many times. It’s visible along a nearby stretch of Route 1, where there’s no place to pull over and cars are going 60-plus mph. I finally figured it out. I have to turn at a certain side road, park the car on the shoulder, and walk across Route 1. Plenty of visibility crossing the road, so that’s not a problem. Of course, when I managed it for the first time, the tide was out, so the island doesn’t show at its best. By the end of the summer, I will capture it early some morning when the tide’s in and the sea is glassy smooth.
Fog is starting to be interesting as the days warm up. It passes through, sometimes close to the ground, sometimes thick enough to cast a shadow, sometimes blotting out the sun like a thick cloud cover that dissipates when you travel just a mile or two inland. One afternoon this week, this stray scrap of fog passed over a field as I was walking. I should have taken video because it was moving quickly.
I’m starting a new quilt top. It’s based on a design called the housetop, which is a variation of the log cabin. Basically it’s concentric squares (rectangles) of alternating colors. I’m going to use the linen I dyed with indigo at a March workshop. Most of it is quite light blue in color, like the sky, with a few clouds floating through. And one or more moons. We’ll see how they fit in.
The idea of a “housetop” in sky colors is irresistible for summer stitching. Even though I should be finishing the quilts I’ve already pieced. Hopefully the time will come for finishing.
Looks like the beginnings of a beautiful quilt .. for you it’s a beginning for me it’ll be an end. I’ve been working on a scrappy string quilt that just yesterday I decided needed a bold boarder. This housetop pattern is going to be perfect ???? so thank you for this post. The other pictures are also beautiful but the quilt block has me doing my happy dance.
I’m so happy there was a connection with you on this, Tina! I wish I could see your quilt.
Oh, that island! There is something so inviting and childlike about it. Like just a story waiting to be told about The Littlest Island. Maybe the children want to run away and that is where they go. It appears so little and safe, but once on the island, they discover that it is a whole world, which is new and exciting to them!
Love the quilt block, especially in the light like this. Please keep showing the progress!
Tina – I wish I could see too ????
That is such a sweet idea. I’ve been thinking about The Littlest Island. It would be a great story.
Your quilt square is so delicate and lovely. It beautifully evokes the sea and misty sky.
Thank you, Dana. That’s what I’m going for!
