The tall garden

I accidentally discovered a garden within a garden. I was wandering in the main vegetable garden at dinner time. Sam and a neighbor were also in the garden, talking. I realized I had a sense of jungly privacy, hiddenness, humidity, and shade. It’s because I was wandering in the area planted with sunflowers, corn and cosmos. How delightful! They have grown so tall it’s like an ecosystem all to itself! The tall garden evolved because I planted a row of corn next to a row of flowers and they both germinated and grew. I’m going to repeat this next year. I love sunflowers and am so happy we got a lot this year. Corn is an experiment, new this year. We’ll see how it goes. I’m fully expecting animals to invade and eat the corn as soon as its ripe – which will be soon.

Tomatoes are plentiful, but many are still green. I expect we’ll be harvesting through September. Here they are festooning the trellis. We used a bag of soymeal this year as fertilizer and it seems to have made a difference.

And a small harvest from the community garden. I’ll be giving these to family, along with other homegrown goodies. We’re going to Portland this weekend for a visit.
